Why Are Some Proxy IPs Blocked While Others Work?

Learn why some proxy IPs may be blocked by a target website while others work normally, and what you can do when this happens.

Written by Alessia

It is possible for one proxy IP to work normally while another IP is blocked, challenged, or restricted by a specific website.

This does not necessarily mean there is an issue with your Rainproxy proxy.

Why can this happen?

IP reputation

Different IP addresses can have different reputations with individual websites. A website may have previously flagged or restricted a particular IP based on its own security systems.

Website-specific restrictions

Websites use different methods to detect and evaluate incoming traffic. An IP that works on one website may be restricted by another.

Different IPs have different histories

Residential IPs are used by real internet connections and their reputation can vary depending on previous activity associated with the IP.

Your request or account activity

A website may consider more than just the IP address when deciding whether to allow a connection. Other factors can include request frequency, cookies, browser settings, account activity, and other signals.

What should I do if an IP is blocked?

If a particular IP is not working with your target website, try the following:

  1. Generate a new proxy or session.

  2. Test another IP.

  3. Try another location if your use case allows it.

  4. Remove unnecessary targeting restrictions.

  5. Test the new IP again with the same target.

If a new IP works, the issue may have been specific to the previous IP or its reputation with the target website.

How can I determine whether the issue is with the proxy or the website?

Try the same proxy with another website.

  • The proxy works on other websites: The issue may be specific to the target website.

  • The proxy does not work anywhere: Check your proxy configuration and credentials.

  • Only certain IPs fail: Generate another IP and compare the results.

Still having trouble?

If multiple fresh proxies are not working with the same target, contact Rainproxy Support and provide:

  • Your Rainproxy plan

  • Proxy configuration

  • Target website

  • Exact error message

  • Screenshot of the issue

  • Results from any tests you have already performed

This information will help our support team investigate the issue more efficiently.
