How to Troubleshoot TLS/SSL Errors When Using a Proxy

Learn what to check when you encounter a TLS or SSL error while connecting through a Rainproxy proxy.

Written by Alessia

A TLS/SSL error means that a secure connection could not be established successfully between your application, the proxy connection, and the destination website.

The error does not necessarily mean that your Rainproxy proxy is unavailable.

Common causes

Incorrect proxy configuration

Check that your:

  • Host

  • Port

  • Username

  • Password

  • Proxy protocol

are configured correctly.

Software compatibility

Different applications handle secure connections through proxies differently.

Make sure your software supports the proxy protocol you're using.

Target website restrictions

The destination website may reject or interrupt a connection for reasons unrelated to the proxy itself.

Application SSL/TLS settings

Some applications have their own SSL/TLS or certificate settings.

Incorrect application settings can prevent a secure connection from being established.

How can I troubleshoot the issue?

1. Generate a fresh proxy

Create a new proxy and test the connection again.

2. Simplify your targeting

If you're using country, state, city, ISP, or other targeting options, temporarily simplify your configuration.

This can help determine whether the issue is related to your selected proxy criteria.

3. Test another supported protocol

If your software supports multiple proxy protocols, test another supported option.

4. Test another IP

Generate another session or proxy and compare the results.

5. Test another website

Try connecting to another HTTPS website.

If other websites work but one specific website produces the TLS/SSL error, the issue may be specific to that destination.

Contact Support

If the issue continues, send Rainproxy Support:

  • Exact TLS/SSL error

  • Screenshot

  • Software/application name

  • Rainproxy plan

  • Proxy protocol

  • Target website

  • Whether another proxy/IP was tested

This information helps our team identify the source of the issue more efficiently.
